Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Death Penalty
Democratic officials demonstrated outrage after former President Donald Trump alleged a group of Democratic legislators of being "traitors" and declared they should be taken into custody and sentenced "through capital punishment" following their posting of a contentious video.
The Message That Sparked the Dispute
The clip, released on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic elected officials who formerly served in defense or defense roles.
"Similar to us, you all made an pledge to defend and defend this founding document," the representatives declared in the 90-second video. "Currently, the dangers to our governing document aren't just from overseas, but from within our own country. Our statutes are explicit, you can decline improper directives, you can refuse unlawful commands, you have to decline unlawful commands. No one has to carry out directives that contravene the statutes or our constitution."
Donald Trump's Furious Response
The video message appeared to trigger a furious reply from the former president.
On Thursday morning, Trump published on his preferred platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional post, he stated: "This constitutes really serious, and Risky to our Nation. Their words cannot be permitted to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third message, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also shared a declaration that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Representatives Answer
Following Trump's remarks on Thursday, Top Democrats published a unified declaration condemning the remarks.
"Violent politics has no role in America," they declared. "Representatives who appeared in the video all worked our nation with tremendous patriotism and distinction. We strongly denounce Donald Trump's disgusting and harmful death threats against congressional representatives, and urge Republican lawmakers to strongly do the same."
The Democratic leaders also mentioned that they had been in communication with protective services "to make certain the safety of these officials and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must without delay delete these unhinged online messages and retract his violent rhetoric before he gets someone killed," the announcement stated.
Lawmakers' Firm Answer
The officials who were featured in the video also released a response.
"We are former service members and security experts who love this country and swore an vow to defend and uphold the national charter of the United States," they declared. "That oath is permanent, and we intend to honor it. No intimidation, coercion, or call for violence will stop us from that sacred responsibility."
"What's most telling is that the former president views it liable to punishment by execution for us to restate the legal requirements," they added. "Military personnel should recognize that we have their support as they fulfill their vow to the constitution and duty to adhere to only legal commands. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They added: "All citizens must come together and censure the former president's calls for our murder and political violence. This is a time for principled stance."
More Partisan Reactions
The Opposition leader also censured Trump's comments and posted on social media: "Let's be crystal clear: the former president is demanding the death of government members."
He added: "This represents an outright THREAT. Each congressional member, all representatives, all citizens – without partisan consideration – should censure this without delay and without qualification."
The GOP leader defended Trump's claim that the Democrats had participated in "sedition", describing the video as "wildly inappropriate", adding: "This constitutes very harmful, you have prominent officials of the legislature advising military personnel to defy commands, I think that represents historic in American history."
The Conservative representative also reportedly informed journalists that in what he examined of Trump's posts, Trump was "describing the offense of sedition" but that "lawyers have to parse the language and decide all that."
Administration Reaction
During a White House press conference on that day, when inquired by a media member, "Would the president want to execute elected officials?", the administration spokesperson responded: "Certainly not."
"It's important to note about what the former president is reacting to," the spokesperson declared. "You have sitting members of the US Congress who conspired to arrange a recorded statement to members of the national defense, to active duty service members encouraging them to ignore the president's legal commands."
She said: "The sanctity of our military relies on the chain of command, and if that system is broken, it can lead to fatalities, it can result in chaos, and that is exactly what these congressional representatives ... are essentially encouraging."
