Eurovision Was Traditionally a Lighthearted Spectacle – Yet It Has Become a Cynical Way to Gloss Over Warfare.

An new term surfaced a few months following the onset of the military campaign against Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it means “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This term is unique to Gaza, per insights from doctors including child health specialists. Typically, it is uncommon for medical staff to attend to a child who has seen the death of their complete family. Yet, there has been no semblance of normality about the genocide in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been obliterated and the number of children who have lost limbs surpasses that of any other place in the world. Nothing ordinary about scores of doctors arriving back from a landscape of rubble with accounts of children being systematically aimed at.

An Unimaginable Crisis In Spite Of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

The Gaza Strip continues to be an utter catastrophe. Essential medical supplies are failing to reach those in need, and groups like Amnesty International assert that atrocities are continuing. The Israeli government has denied these allegations, just as it refutes all charges it is implicated in. Yet as traumatised orphans are now enduring frigid conditions in temporary shelters, there is some ostensibly positive news: nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from continuing with its professed goal of “unity and artistic sharing.” The contest will continue to offer a welcoming platform for Israel, even though several European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Since this, we are told, is what international harmony resembles.

The contest, notably prohibited Russia from taking part in 2022 due to the “grave situation in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza is entirely distinct.

Contradictory Principles

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was alleged to have used unfair vote practices last year in what seems to have been an bid to politicise Eurovision. Forget the fact that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Neglect the data that attacks by settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have escalated. Overlook the situation that foreign reporters are still prevented from independent reporting in Gaza. This entire context, apparently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues Against a Backdrop of Profound Human Cost

The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – nearly twice the projected longevity of a person in Gaza now. The broadcast will air, but it will never be able to restore the whimsical pleasure it once represented. An institution that initially championed peace has transformed into a transparent instrument to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
