Shoaib Bashir Makes Surprise Inclusion in English Ashes Squad
England have chosen a twelve-player squad just 48 hours before the opening Test match, with Shoaib Bashir securing a unexpected place.
Bashir's selection suggests that the tourists will wait until the morning of the initial match to determine whether Perth Stadium conditions favor four seamers or the inclusion of a spin bowler.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are part of the selected group, showing there are no doubts about their fast bowler's condition.
The other seamers round out the attack, with Carse most likely to be omitted if Bashir makes the starting XI.
Pitch Factors Lean Toward Pace Bowlers
The England coach had been expected to opt for an all-seam attack on a venue that has staged several past matches.
During these games, 134 wickets have been taken by pace bowling, with only a small number to spin.
Of those 40 wickets, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has taken the bulk, while overseas slow bowlers combined have just a handful.
On a ground renowned for its speed and carry, and whose curator, the pitch preparer, pledged that these characteristics are “permanent and not going to change,” a team loaded with seamers remains the probable decision.
Spin Options Considered
There had been rumors that Will Jacks could be parachuted into the team to provide some slow bowling while also bolstering the batting lineup.
But the coach has opted to stick with the young spinner, having stated earlier this year that he would be his preferred spinner for the Ashes.
In July, Lyon commented on Bashir as “decent,” saying that “from my perspective, the experienced spinner is still England’s best spinner.”
“This is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who lack experience in the past in these conditions,” he said of slow bowling in Australian Tests.
“I’m not going to let my secrets out so opponents come out and excel out here.”
