For much of the fifth and final season of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max find themselves trapped in a realm of memories forged from the recollections of the villain Henry. The search for freedom in "Escape from Camazotz" leads them to witness again a life-altering moment from Henry's early years—an event that may just hold the key to defeating him permanently.

A Journey Into the Tunnel

After locating Max in the psychic realm known as Camazotz, Holly discovers she is taking refuge in a cave that Henry strangely fears. A clever observation a spyglass found in Henry's old home lets Holly see that the source of fear lies outside of the cave. By aligning her view to the cut-out, she and Max plummet into a deep mine shaft.

They watch a young, eight-year-old Henry come across an wounded, fearful individual. When Henry tries to help, the man panics and shoots, striking Henry in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly questions through tears. It was a factor, but the trauma went deeper than a defensive killing.

In keeping with mysteries this season, the significance of the events in the tunnel was first explored the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

The Philadelphia Experiment and A Spy's Mission

This backstory explains the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which reportedly teleported a U.S. Navy ship into a realm dubbed the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the lone returnee was the captain, who emerged in a catatonic condition with an entirely new blood.

This man's son, a young Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this dimensional breach in Nevada. However, a treacherous employee stole research materials to hand over to the Communist spies, who were keen to start their version of the tests. The man in the cavern was that very thief.

Unlocking the Mystery

Considering what is revealed about his research, the container almost certainly contained vials of Captain Brenner's infected blood. In the scene, Henry is bleeding from his hand. Exposure likely occurred upon contact with the blood, causing the development of his psychic abilities—traits he would inadvertently transfer to the children in Hawkins Lab.

Another possibility, the case could have held dark matter that eventually found its way to the secret facility, where it acts to anchor the Upside Down. The prequel shows that Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, coming back hours later as a different person. From then on, he fights the influence of a sinister presence, reminiscent of how Will was possessed by the entity in the past.

The Power of Fear

The reason Henry avoids the cave of that cave highlights how utterly horrifying the event was for him. Even as he orchestrates the Hive Mind and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche lingers. Fear is his tool, and the narrative points to a final confrontation between the monster and Will, who has overcome his greatest terrors to gain strength.

This journey has effectively disarmed Vecna. Crucially, Will now knows what Vecna himself fears, and this may grant a decisive edge in the series finale to come.
