UK, UN and EU Denounce ‘Monumental Injustice’ of Jimmy Lai’s Two-Decade Prison Term.
The court decision of pro-democracy activist Jimmy Lai, a British national Jimmy Lai to 20 years in prison in Hong Kong has elicited global rebuke. Advocacy bodies and several nations have called the security-related charges influenced by political considerations.
International Outcry and Demands for Freedom
Britain's top diplomat Yvette Cooper stated that the two-decade sentence amounts to a prison term lasting the rest of his natural life. She described the legal case as having political underpinnings under a law intended to muzzle critics of China. Cooper called on Hong Kong's authorities to end his ordeal and release him to his family.
“This ruling illustrates how the ambiguous and wide-ranging stipulations of Hong Kong’s legal framework may be enforced in violation of universal rights standards,” remarked the UN rights chief Volker Türk.
A European bloc official, Anitta Hipper, said the bloc “deplores” the conclusion of the judicial process and called for his swift liberation without preconditions.
Background of the Case
Jimmy Lai, the force that established the now-shuttered activist publication, was arrested in 2020 the enactment of a disputed security legislation in Hong Kong. The law was enacted by Beijing following months of pro-democracy protests which Lai and his newspaper supported.
He was ultimately convicted on counts of conspiracy to produce seditious material and plotting to collaborate with external actors. The collusion allegations were brought under the controversial security law.
A Son’s Anguish
The activist's child, Sebastien, conveyed that his father is afraid of passing away in isolation without seeing his family again. Lai's defense lawyers has called him the “world’s highest profile prisoner of conscience” in custody today.
Sebastien Lai noted that while the sentence was expected, its confirmation was more painful than imagined, yet it provided some “respite” that the legal proceedings had concluded.
International Ramifications
This ruling has cast a shadow over diplomatic ties between London and Beijing. The UK's head of government Keir Starmer reportedly raised Lai’s case during a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping recently. Yet, visible progress on obtaining his liberty is uncertain.
Sebastien Lai questioned the point of a visa-free travel agreement announced recently, remarking it felt “rather incongruous.”
Government Reactions
Conversely, the officials from China endorsed the court's decision. Hong Kong’s leader John Lee claimed the verdict showed that “the rule of law is upheld.”
The mouthpiece of China’s foreign ministry, Lin Jian, described Lai as the “primary instigator” behind past unrest and asserted the legal case had been “justified and legal.” He called on foreign countries not to interfere in China’s internal affairs.
A Symbolic Case
Media freedom advocates have described Lai as a symbol of declining journalistic independence in Hong Kong. The organization's director general remarked it was a “somber occasion for those who value a independent media.”
Given an almost 100% success rate in prosecuting national security offences, Lai’s lengthy term is seen as the toughest yet imposed under the security statute.
